Carnegie Mellon University and the Mellon College of Science

Carnegie Mellon is one of the nation's top-ranked centers of
higher education. Composed of seven colleges and numerous research institutes, it was
founded in 1900 by the American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and
originally named Carnegie Technical Schools. In 1967, "Carnegie Tech" merged
with the Mellon Institute of Research to form Carnegie Mellon University.
Today Carnegie Mellon is a multidisciplinary research institution of approximately 7,200
students, 1,070 faculty and 3,350 staff located in Pittsburgh, PA. Our department is part
of the Mellon College of Science. Research in the biological sciences, chemistry
and mathematical sciences thrives in this highly
interdisciplinary environment.
Located between a quiet, residential neighborhood and Pittsburgh's beautiful Schenley
Park, the Carnegie Mellon campus spans approximately 103 acres and contains 59 buildings.
Recent construction projects have given the campus a new dormitory/dining hall, parking
building, stadium, university center, and engineering building, with a new fine arts
building currently under construction.
Student campus activities vary from special
interest clubs to intramural and club sports. Fitness and recreation facilities available
to all students include athletic fields, tennis courts, gymnasiums, racquetball courts, a
swimming pool and a weight room.
As a graduate student, you are encouraged to become a full member of the university
community -- a community that is diverse, energetic and enthusiastic. You can enjoy campus
sporting events, hear lectures by internationally known speakers, and attend top-notch
theater and musical performances. An international festival and spring carnival are two of Carnegie
Mellon's most popular traditions. Coffeehouses, bookstores, galleries and restaurants are
a mainstay of the Oakland area of Pittsburgh, where Carnegie Mellon is located.
